M. Alim Malik and Joel Covelman Discuss Cyber Law With Law Enforcement Officials at USC Sponsored Program
IRVINE, CA - At the invitation of Dr. Winnie Callahan (Assoc. Director, Informatics, University of Southern California Viterbi School of Engineering), M. Alim Malik, the President of Jackson DeMarco Tidus & Peckenpaugh and Chair of the Firm’s Litigation Group, and Senior Counsel Joel Covelman, of the Firm’s Intellectual Property Group, spoke to an assembled group of law enforcement officials from the LAPD and LA Sheriff’s Department about the growing problem of cyber-related crimes, both in the US and internationally. The attorneys cited the growing number of occurrences of cyber-related intrusions, citing such recent high profile examples as the Target and Nieman Marcus security breaches. The presentation highlighted the need for better detection of intrusions, preservation of evidence, timely reporting to law enforcement, current issues regarding the adequacy of police search warrants, recent suppression of evidence cases under the U.S. Constitution’s 4th Amendment, and improved cooperation between the private sector and law enforcement. The presentation, entitled, “Cyber Law Issues,” was held on February 20, 2014.
